Today, chrome OEM wheels are almost a forgotten part of automotive culture. Modern trends have shifted toward black wheels, machined finishes, satin textures, and powder-coated designs. But during the late 1980s and 1990s, chrome factory wheels became one of the most influential automotive styling trends in the United States — and much of that trend began in Southern California.
Few people realize that chrome plating alloy OEM wheels was once considered extremely difficult and commercially impractical. While chrome plating steel wheels had existed for decades, alloy wheels presented a completely different challenge.
The Early Days of Chrome Alloy Wheels
In the mid-1980s, Southern California was the center of automotive customization in America. The Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Fernando Valley markets contained some of the highest-volume car dealerships in the country, and these dealerships often became trend setters for the rest of the automotive industry.
At that time, our wheel and tire operation was heavily involved with dealership accessory programs throughout Greater Los Angeles. Around 1985, we began experimenting with local chrome plating companies to develop a reliable process for chrome plating OEM alloy wheels.
The process was far more complicated than plating steel wheels.
Factory alloy wheels first had to be stripped of their painted silver finish and polished to an almost perfect surface before plating could begin. The preparation process was extremely labor intensive because any imperfection in the wheel surface would show through the chrome finish. In addition, the actual plating chemistry and methods had to be modified for aluminum alloy wheels.
Several months of experimentation followed before the first successful production-quality chrome plated OEM wheels were achieved around 1986.
The First Chrome OEM Wheels
One of the earliest successful applications involved Toyota Supra OEM wheels displayed in the showroom of what was then one of the largest Toyota dealerships in the United States.
At first, chrome OEM wheels were considered unusual and highly customized. The concept took roughly one to two years before consumer demand began growing rapidly. But once car buyers saw factory wheels transformed into chrome finishes, the trend accelerated quickly.
Unlike aftermarket custom wheels, chrome OEM wheels retained:
- original factory fitment
- original ride quality
- original engineering and safety specifications
while dramatically changing the appearance of the vehicle. This combination proved extremely attractive to both dealers and consumers.
The Lexus Boom
The true explosion of chrome OEM wheels began around 1989 with the introduction of Lexus in the United States.
Because our operation already worked with many Toyota dealerships throughout Southern California, we quickly became heavily involved with Lexus dealer accessory programs. Demand for chrome Lexus OEM wheels became enormous.
At the peak of the trend, some Lexus dealerships reportedly displayed nearly half of their inventory with chrome plated factory wheels. Chrome wheels became one of the most profitable and desirable dealer-installed accessories of the era.
The system itself was surprisingly efficient.
Our company would install high-quality European aftermarket wheels on dealership inventory in exchange for the original factory wheels. Those OEM wheels would then be chrome plated and later exchanged back onto dealership vehicles in place of the OE silver wheels.
The process allowed dealerships to rapidly customize large numbers of vehicles while maintaining factory wheel designs that buyers already recognized and trusted.
Southern California Became the Center of the Industry
The chrome OEM wheel business became heavily concentrated in the Greater Los Angeles area for several reasons.
Southern California:
- had one of the largest concentrations of high-volume dealerships in the country
- strongly influenced national automotive trends
- had chrome plating facilities capable of handling the required processes
- developed local expertise in plating alloy wheels
As demand grew, an entire support industry emerged around OEM chrome wheels.
One particularly interesting challenge involved wheel center caps. Since many OEM center caps were plastic, they could not simply be chrome plated using standard methods. This led to the development of creative finishing techniques and specialty cap manufacturing processes designed to match chrome plated wheels.
The Decline of Chrome OEM Wheels
Like many automotive trends, chrome OEM wheels eventually began to fade.
During the 2000s and 2010s:
- darker finishes became more popular
- black chrome emerged briefly
- satin and machined finishes gained popularity
- black powder-coated wheels became dominant
At the same time:
- environmental regulations increased
- chrome plating costs rose
- manufacturing trends changed
Eventually, consumer demand for chrome OEM wheels declined dramatically.
Today, the once-massive OEM chrome wheel exchange business has largely disappeared. What was once one of the most influential dealership accessory trends in America is now almost nonexistent.
A Unique Era in Automotive Customization
The chrome OEM wheel movement represented a unique moment in automotive history — a time when factory styling and custom appearance were combined in a way that appealed to both dealers and consumers.
What began as a difficult experimental process in Southern California eventually influenced dealerships and automotive accessory markets throughout the United States.
While modern wheel trends continue to evolve, chrome OEM wheels remain an important chapter in the history of automotive customization and dealer-installed accessories.
