What Does Offset Mean?
Offset is the distance between:
- The centerline of the wheel
and - The mounting surface
Offset = Backspace – (Rim Width/2)
It’s measured in millimeters. To determine the rim backstage:
- Position the rim face down.
- Lay a straight-edge across the back of the rim. Measure the distance from the straight-edge to the rim’s hub mounting surface.
- Measure rim overall width.
- Divide the overall width by two, then subtract this result from the backspace value.
Types of Offset
Positive offset
- Mounting surface is toward the outside
- Wheels sit further inside the fender
Negative offset
- Wheels stick out more
- Common for aggressive or off-road setups
Zero offset
- Mounting surface is centered
Why It Matters
Wrong offset can cause:
- Rubbing against suspension
- Tires sticking out too far
- Poor handling
Real-World Tip
Many people focus only on wheel size—but offset is just as important. A 20-inch wheel with the wrong offset may not fit at all.
